Hooray for benches that you can sleep on, skate on, have picnics at, wait on, meet fellow community members on and more, I'm sure.
As an architect I am hopeful for more generous bench provision and also the doorways of commercial buildings... such good sheltered spaces for people outside business hours!
Along with a local artist of my hometown, Newcastle, Australia, we are in a urban installation exhibition at the moment. http://greenteam.blogspot.com/2008/02/catch-bus-from-your-living-room.html The idea was to make a bus shelter as comfortable as your living room. Previously on this site there was no shelter at all, so we built this funky one!

I agree with Thompson. He's engaging in legitimate social exchange, as if he has to justify using a public bench, and the powers that be are mischaracterizing the bench's usage to justify making the bench harder to use (which seems to be an end unto itself in most cases, like this one).
